French brothers become first-ever KWC-trained OAC youth state qualifiers
Kirtland youth wrestlers Alex and Christian French both placed fourth at their weight classes at the Ohio Athletic Committee district tournament at Midpark High School, becoming the first Kirtland youth wrestlers to ever qualify for the OAC state tournament. Congratulations, boys! Good luck at the state tournament!
Both brothers also qualified for the OYWA district tournament this year along with teammates Spencer McLelland, Austin Fulco and Mason Sullivan. In Alex's second-consecutive trip to Austintown, the Mentor sectional champion scored two wins by pin to advance to the semifinal round. Christian, in his first-ever varsity postseason action, placed third at the Mentor sectional tournament and battled very tough on both weekends. Spencer, also in his first-ever varsity postseason action, finished as the runner-up at the sectional tournament at Mentor before heading to Austintown. There, he powered through his first opponent with a blast double-leg takedown and three near-fall points to open the bout but then got rolled through and caught on his back. He wrestled well and looks to carry that momentum forward as he moves on to the KMS squad. Austin battled very tough opponents -- the first a state placewinner. His second district tournament bout showed his drive as he successfully penetrated on his leg attacks for the majority of the match. He will undoubtedly be a team leader next year. Mason may have had the best tournament of any Kirtland wrestler. In his first match, he battled a very tough opponent from Grand Valley, winning by taking his opponent down and forcing him to his back in overtime. After a tough second match, he bounced back with a dominant 12-0 victory by technical fall. In his next match, he nearly had his third district-level win, throwing his opponent to his back for six points (two for a takedown plus three near-fall points and a penalty point) but ultimately lost by just a single point. He definitely looks ready to qualify for the state tournament next year.
Before the KWC existed...
- Royal Brettrager II, a 2010 KHS graduate and two-time high school All-Ohioan, earned All-Ohio honors as a youth wrestler as well, placing fourth at the OYWA state tournament while wrestling for the West End YMCA Wrestling Club. He is currently attending Liberty University, where he qualified for the NCAA Division 1 National Championships as a true freshman before LU cut their wrestling program.
- Chris Kalina, a 2004 KHS graduate and high school state tournament qualifier, qualified for the OYWA state tournament while wrestling for the Mentor Wrestling Club. He is currently a U.S. Marine, husband and new father of one.
- Evan Francis, a current KHS wrestler, was an OYWA state tournament qualifier while wrestling for the Jefferson Wrestling Club.
